About

On a hillside in Kalimpong, India a unique cosmopolitan town where India meets Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibet to the north, spread over 500 acres is the day and boarding school of Dr. Graham’s Homes accommodating around 1500 students. The very youngest are only three years old and have been plucked from the streets of Calcutta to begin a new life in the Lucia King kindergarten. At any one time there will be close to 300 such children supported by sponsors around the world progressing through a cottage system started by Dr Graham more than 119 years ago.

Our Mission

About the founder

In March of 1889, Dr. John Anderson Graham an ordained minister in the church of Scotland along with his wife Katherine Graham arrived in Kalimpong. Soon after they would start St Andrew's colonial homes (StACH) on 24th September 1900 with 6 children. The school was originally built to care for the "Tea garden children" These were children left behind by their British fathers due to being unacceptable into the father’s community and not always accepted by the mother’s because of the stigma of mixed blood and illegitimacy. Dr Graham seeing the need was a man on a mission, he built close to 44 buildings in a span of 20 years which was dubbed "the children's city" to care for these children. Thousands of children would arrive over the years from Calcutta and across India to live and study in the Homes under the care of their adopted house parents and funded by benevolent wellwishers from across the U.K. and the West.
